Announcing: Huntington Beach RACES 2015   Leave a comment

wayne yoshida-tech writer HB-RACES FD

Who: Huntington Beach Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) team will demonstrate and practice their emergency radio communications skills in a nation-wide drill called “Field Day.” RACES (pronounced “RAY-sees”), is a program endorsed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC Part 97, Section 407), that uses trained amateur radio operators (Hams) during emergencies. Administered by the Fire Department, RACES members use their personal equipment and skills, and volunteer their time to provide this service at no cost to the City of Huntington Beach.

When: Saturday, June 27, 2015, at approximately 11 AM – 5 PM (RACES volunteers will participate 24 hours)

Where: PCH and Goldenwest on the bluffs.

What: During Field Day, amateur radio (HAM) operators from the US and Canada will practice their emergency communications skills over a 24 hour period with the goal of demonstrating portable and completely independent communications. The public and the news media are invited to observe and participate in the radio exercise.

During an emergency, normal lines of communications can fail leaving amateur radio communications as the only means to communicate. In addition, they support public events such as the Surf City Marathon and the 4th of July Parade, and participate in the National Weather Service weather spotter program. Ham radio is a public service as well as an international educational technical hobby. Whether it’s contacting someone across the street or across the globe, or even outer space, ham radio operators are ready to supply reliable communications when normal lines fail. Ham operators range from ordinary citizens to astronauts. There are 18 city RACES groups within Orange County, operated under their respective city and county public safety departments.

My Mentors Rock!   2 comments

As 2014 comes to a close, I’d like to thank the special people who have either supported me in some way, or taught me new skills or life lessons. These are folks that really rock, and deserve some recognition.

A special award goes to Colleen Jones, then a counselor at the Orange County, CA One Stop Center. Colleen presented her views and explained how the applicant tracking systems (ATS) in widespread use work. Learning about these systems proved to be a huge asset in my job search toolbox. Colleen is now the Human Resource & Talent Acquisition Leader at Go Rentals, Inc. Click here to see the original special award post.

Orange County Brew Ha Ha   Leave a comment

Went to a craft beer tasting festival today called the OC Brew Ha Ha. Amazing. According to the Brew Ha Ha website, the event is for a great cause:

“Because our first event was on 9/11/10, we continue our great partnership with the Local 3631 Firefighters Union. Most of our beer is served by off-duty Orange County Firefighters. This event raises thousands of dollars for the Fallen Fire Fighters Relief Fund, a non-profit organization that aids surviving spouses and children of Orange County Firefighters lost in the line-of-duty.”

More than 80 breweries came to Oak Canyon Park in Silverado, CA to display and provide samples to beer fans from all over Orange and LA counties. The warm weather and salty food combined to make a great Saturday afternoon outing.

Of course I had to sample as many brews as possible. Although I did not get to taste every single one of them, I did manage to taste some new beers I never had before.

The event reminded me of a Maker Faire event, but for adults only, and the “made” stuff included carbonated alcoholic beverages.

One comment: I wish the food was better. I tried some tacos and they were so salty they were inedible. I wonder of a Southern California EGGFEST can be combined with this event?

I don’t have too many pictures from this event, I was focused on getting in line for as many beer samples as possible. The Winter edition of the Brew Ha Ha — The Brew Ho-Ho Holiday Ale Festival – is on December 13

Intelligent Infrared Sensors at Bay Area Maker Faire 2014   Leave a comment

University of California, Davis engineering students  Sam Dawson (left) and Andrew Chung (right) demonstrate their engineering project at the Bay Area Maker Faire. The microprocessors in each box are equipped with infrared sensors and emitters that “talk” to each other and glow different colors to indicate their relationships to another box.

The project provided hands-on experience in both hardware and software to supplement lectures and textbook learning.

Fed by Agility Fuel Systems: $107 Million Worth of MCI CNG Commuter Coach Buses   Leave a comment

No, not the long distance phone company. MCI is Motor Coach Industries in Schaumburg, IL USA.

MCI recently won an order for 84 of their CNG buses ($107.4 million) from New Jersey Transit.

Take a look at the beautiful buses made by MCI, powered by clean-burning compressed natural gas fed via Agility Fuel Systems.
